Laverne Amay

Laverne Amay, 70, of Hilo, died Feb. 1 at home. Born Aug. 10, 1941, in Hilo, she was retired from Hawaiian Telephone Co. as an installation coordinator and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Feb. 15 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may call at 8 a.m. Feb. 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial will be at Homelani Memorial Park (Ilima Section). Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Julio Amay, of Hilo; sons, Benjamin (Beatrice) Amay, of Volcano, James Amay and Floyd Amay, both of Hilo; sister, Sonia Madaloniz, of Hilo, HI; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Benjamin Joaquin Sr.

Benjamin Gerardo Joaquin Sr., 91, of Honokaa, died Feb. 4 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Gabu, Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired bulldozer operator for the former Davies Hamakua, former shuttle bus driver for the Hilton Waikoloa, member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Honokaa Ward and Honokaa Filipino Club.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 17 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Honokaa, for an 11 a.m. service. Burial to follow at Alae Cemetery, Mormon Section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by daughters, Teresita (Florencio) Ramos, of Waimea, Dalles Turbeville, of Las Vegas, Donna (Bert) Kotaki, of Hilo; sons, Benjamin (Beverly) Joaquin Jr., of Laupahoehoe, Brocky (Puanani) Joaquin, of Honokaa, Lance (Tami) Joaquin, of Kawaihae, Clayton (Jan) Joaquin, of Hilo; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eduarda Julian

Eduarda “Duarda” Susa Julian, 88, of Pahoa, died Jan. 18 in Hilo. Born Oct. 1, 1923, in Banna, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a retired co-owner of Julian’s Papaya Farm and member of Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6:45 p.m. celebration of life. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. Feb. 18 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Pahoa Catholic Cemetery. Family requests semi-casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by husband, Marcos Julian, of Pahoa; sons, Laureto (Elizabeth) Julian, Juanito (Eredulin) Julian, William (Catherine) Julian, all from Pahoa; sisters, Flaviana Ramos, of Pahoa, Antonia Alejandro, of Philippines; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Clyde Muranaka

Clyde “Tamo” H. Muranaka, 54, of Hilo, died Jan. 29 at his residence. Born Oct. 10, 1957, in Honokaa, he was a driver for Air Freight Specialist and Pacific Floral Exchange, previously employed by State Highways in Honokaa, Coastline Express, Herbs Diner, Ando Store and Ken’s Service Station and member of Hawaii Army National Guard and Glad Tidings Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 17 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Cremation follows. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Anna Muranaka, of Honokaa; daughters, Leandrea (Ricky Ferreira Jr.) Muranaka, Joannalyn Muranaka and Tashina Muranaka, all of Honokaa; son, Braxston Muranaka, of Honokaa; father, Tamotsu Muranaka, of Keaau; brothers, Lloyd (Bea) Muranaka ,of South Carolina, Paul (Janice) Muranaka and Adrian Medallia Jr., both of Hilo; sisters, Leelynn (Paul) Lagat, of Keaau, Tammy Muranaka, of Waimea, Kellcia (Tim Machado) and Tracey Yamane, both of Hilo, Colleen (Larry) Correia, of Kalopa; one granddaughter; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joseph Perreira

Joseph T. Perreira, 89, of Hilo, died Feb. 8 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born June 18, 1922, in Hilo, hee was owner of the former Hilo Express and a delivery driver for the Mauna Kea Banana Co. and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at Homelani Memorial Park, Section 7. Family requests casual attire be worn and flowers omitted.

He is survived by sons, Kenneth (Dee) Perreira and Carl (Terri) Perreira, both of Hilo; daughters, Geraldine (Eddie) Carreira and June (Richard) Ha, both of Hilo; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Herbert De Luz

Herbert Patrick De Luz, 78, of Honokaa, died Feb. 4 at Hale Hoola Hamakua. Born May 6, 1933, in Pepeekeo, he was a rancher/meat cutter for Frank De Luz Ranch Inc., a professional cook, 2012 president of the Resident Counsel at Hale Hoola Hamakua, member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa, former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paauilo, former member of Honokaa Businessman Association and Puako Businessman Association, counsel to the Hawaii Portuguese Heritage, former treasurer for St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paauilo and former member of Kukuau Kumiai.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Feb. 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Honokaa, for a 10 a.m. Mass. Urn committal services will be held at a later date. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by brothers, David (Josephine) De Luz Sr., of Paauilo, Frank De Luz III, of Hilo; sister, Gladys (Bruce) Mello, of Honolulu; numerous nieces, nephews and an aunt.
